Reflections
of Our ECaP Retreat
October 2000
by
Barry Bittman, MD
Our
recent retreat was no less than magic.
Words
cannot express the insights that surfaced when individuals with
cancer and their loved-ones worked together, played together, drummed
together and shared their deepest thoughts and feelings during an
ECaP retreat.
An
ECaP retreat is a phenomenal learning experience-- an opportunity
to discover the information and insights each person needs to proceed
along their healing path. It is a blend of evidence-based approaches
coupled with nurturing and camaraderie that empower each person
to put back into their life what is missing.
It's
difficult to describe the anxiety and frustrations initially expressed
by our participants, and how rapidly such sentiments were transformed
into healthy beliefs, attitudes, renewed relationships and new ones
with individuals so far away, yet so close to our hearts.
An
ECaP retreat is a week of learning, growing and blossoming into
the people we choose to be. As Bernie says, "it's an opportunity
to give birth to ourselves."
For
me, this experience is a gift-- the expression of the power of the
human spirit to exceed the challenge of any obstacle. Our patients
and their loved-ones have transformed my life in ways that words
cannot express.
