My First Native American Drumming Circle

by Brenda Halgren (with a response from Bernie)

My first Native American drumming circle met last night.
God joined us with thunder drums and rain stick forcing us inside.
Twenty some people drumming, with 5 cats we must have been a sight.
The talking stick was passed ... the only time you were allowed to confide.
The sage was lit to cleanse us in both body and spirit.
The drum started in the north, south, east, then west.
We joined in.
I closed my eyes beating the beat as I heard it.
At times it grew so strong, I felt the beat within my chest.
I wondered if the spirits of Indians lived within the cats.
None of them had any fear of the noise we were making.
One big yellow one sat within a drum, another lay upon a mat.
A gray one sat in a chair next to a girl, watching the gourd she was shaking.
A black and white one just sat and stared, oblivious to us, he just didn't care.
I don't know what I got out of this.
It would probably be more spiritual in the woods, I guess.
If people could see me now, would they think me dumb?
I am pursuing all sorts of things, both for spirit as well as fun.
Many are quick to judge, and do not understand not knowing that the inner child needs to be fed, and that laughter heals.
They are quick to criticize, not knowing how it feels.
Concerned only that you may embarrass them, their actions squelch your desire to act on whims.
Your life goes on, but your spirit is drained.
You are afraid to have fun, or be insane.
They know not what they miss, nor what they do,
not allowing you to be you.

Introductions

The other day I introduced my right hand to my body
I thought they ought to know each other better.
People said that's crazy, they already know each other.
They are all part of the same thing
made of the same thing
come from the same thing.
They don't need an introduction

I was thinking when I get to heaven
and they ask me if i want to be introduced to God,
I'll say that's crazy, we already know each other.
We are part of the same thing
made of the same thing
come from the same thing.
Just tell Him his right hand is here.
